Layoffs at Incat
NICK CLARK - The Mercury (2010-02-04 19:00:39)
HOBART shipbuilder Incat has laid off 20 workers as it nears completion of its latest vessel.
Australian Manufacturing Workers Union state president Darren Clark said 10 full-time employees and 10 casuals employed by a labour hire firm were going.
Incat managing director Craig Clifford said the changes were cyclical: "As a boat nears the end not as many people are required," Mr Clifford said.
He said Incat had about 320 employees at present.
Mr Clark said some of the laid-off employees had up to 20 years' experience.
"It is disappointing that they are getting rid of long-term employees when you consider that there are still about 50 casuals employed by a labour hire firm," Mr Clark said.
"They are paying out large sums in redundancy and getting rid of their most experienced employees. There is no loyalty whatsoever."
Mr Clifford said Incat was pursuing some promising inquiries about its latest vessel.
"The European market normally heats up around this time as they emerge from winter and plan for the summer," he said.
