A MOONAH man has died while diving for scallops in the d'Entrecasteaux Channel.

The 48-year-old was in Great Bay, off Bruny Island, when he got into difficulty yesterday.

Marine Police and another boat in the Channel responded to the distress call from the man's two diving companions.

Tasmania Police said cardio-pulmonary resuscitation was given until the Tasmanian Ambulance Service met them at Woodbridge but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. [read more...]

Tasmanian sailors Zac Pullen from Hobart and Angus Barton from Launceston are well down the overall standings after the third day of competition in the Laser Radial World Youth Championships being sailed at Largs, Scotland.

Lack of wind prevented any sailing for the first day and a half and so far the 320 competitors from 42 nations have completed only three races, with today’s racing in 6-8 knots. [read more...]

Team Whistler, Australia’s sole entry in the British Three Peaks Race, tonight are steadily gaining ground on the leading UK boats as they sail up the rugged coast of Scotland on the final on-water leg of the challenging combination of short-handed sailing and mountain climbing.

As they passed the island of Islay (famous for its single malt whisky) and headed north toward the famous seaport of Oban, Team Whistler’s chartered 38-footer Lightning Reflex had sailed into third place in the fleet, regaining some of the time lost by tide and time at Whitehaven at the end of the second sailing leg. Team Whistler from the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania has won the first sailing leg of the British Three Peaks Race, from Barmouth to Caernarfon in Wales, with its runners started out on the cross country run and steep climb to the top of Mount Snowdon and back.
The Three Peaks Race started early today, Australian time, with Team Whistler’s chartered yacht, Lightning Reflex, outsailing the other 22 boats on the 62 nautical miles of sailing to reach Caernarfon in the narrow Menai Straits about eight hours later. [read more...]

Hobart yachtsman David Rees and his team face a unique experience in the British Three Peaks Race that starts in Wales tonight – 'taking an ocean racer white water rafting.'

Rees made this comment on the eve of the rugged sailing and mountain running challenge ahead of Team Whistler when the Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania team joins 22 other teams in the 33rd running of the ‘grandfather’ of three peaks events, whose offspring includes the Tasmanian Three Peaks. A WOMAN has drowned at St Helens after a boat carrying five occupants overturned this morning.

A police spokesman said that four people had been located after the boat overturned off Beerbarrel Beach about 10.15am.

Tasmania has added to its system of marine protected areas (MPAs) with the creation of 16 new MPAs in south-east Tasmania. The 16 reserves extend over about 12,000ha and cover the range of marine ecosystems found in south-east Tasmania; including rocky reefs, inter-tidal sand flats, seagrass beds, kelp communities, mudflats and offshore reefs and islands. Five young Tasmanian sailors are in the team of ten to represent Australia at the International Cadet World championships to be sailed on the River Plate at Buenos Aires, Argentina, at the end of this month.

The Tasmanians, all from Sandy Bay Sailing Club, assembled at the club today to try out their new uniforms with team members flying out of Hobart at the weekend to begin two to three weeks of intensive training in chartered

Tasmania's most promising young sailors today displayed the skills that could make them future national champions when they competed in the State's newest regatta, The Showdown, on Hobart's Derwent River.

A total of 147 off-the-beach dinghies, skiffs, catamarans and sailboards are competing in the three day regatta that began with a twilight race for keelboats on Friday evening. Today saw a 'sea of sail' on the Derwent. [read more...]

With the start of the new licensing year on Sunday 1st November, fishers are reminded to renew their recreational fishing licences for abalone, rock lobster, scallops and netting. A new licence for using set lines has also been introduced following the scalefish review.

Licences can be renewed online at www.fishing.tas.gov.au/licence or are available from Service Tasmania shops. The 2009-10 Recreational Sea Fishing Guide and new fish measuring rulers can also be obtained from Service Tasmania and most bait and tackle shops. and Gauges for measuring abalone, rock lobster and scallops are also available from Service Tasmania. These products are funded from Fishwise - Our Recreational Sea fishing licence fees at work.

Three Tasmanian yachts are contesting the annual Melbourne to Stanley Yacht Race, the tough 152 nautical mile race across Bass Strait, to be sailed this coming weekend.

The fleet will start from Queenscliff, just inside The Rip at Port Phillip at 4.30am on Saturday, enabling the yachts to sail into Bass Strait at slack tide. [read more...]

Hobart yachtswoman Sally Rattle and her skipper Scott Brain got off to a winning start today in their Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race campaign when Sally's Archambault 35 Archie won Division 1 of Bellerive Yacht Club's Pennant race on the Derwent.

Archie has been a most successful harbour and offshore racing yacht over the past three seasons, winning the Bruny Island Race, the Maria Island Race and the Combined Club Offshore Series in southern Tasmania and also the 2008
Melbourne to Hobart Race.

Tasmanian based Fiomarine has entered the oil and gas market with a sale of its Fiobuoys into the expanding Western Australian market. URS Australia recently placed an order for five Fiobuoys to assist in its offshore underwater operations.

Fiomarine first introduced the Fiobuoy to offshore customers at the Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference (AOG) in Perth, Western Australia earlier this year. [read more...]

The Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA) has appointed Martin Robinson, General Manager of The Royal Yacht Club of Tasmania (RYCT) to its Board of Directors. This new appointment means MIAA now has Board representation from each Australian state.

MIAA Chairman Andrew Chapman says, “We are very pleased to welcome Martin to our existing Board of Directors. MIAA has 14 of its 183 members in Tasmania and this appointment provides a direct linkage with the marina industries in Tasmania. We look forward to Martin’s participation in further strengthening our capacity to respond to the needs of industry in Tasmania and to liaise with government to ensure that marina industries are effectively promoted and protected”.
